tip - How to create a press release

Press releases are a great way to get free publicity, and you can create them yourself at no cost. The media are usually more than happy to receive press releases direct from the source, but they will only consider using ones that are interesting.

Here are a few tips to help:

Type up your press release on an A4 document, using Word or similar.

Give it the heading "Press Release on behalf of ......" followed by the date.

Underneath create a catchy headline in bold.

Then give details of the story in as exciting a way as possible and describe the positive effect or affect this has had.

Accompany the release with an interesting and relevant picture - you’ll need to include people who are involved in the story.

Provide a contact name and number where the media can obtain more information.

Identify the media you want to get coverage in, call them, and ask to speak to someone about your story (don’t feel intimidated - they need and want news!)

Follow up your call by sending your press release. If sending by email try to include the release as part of the email, rather than an attachment.
